According to data recently released by the Organization for Co-operation and Development (OECD), more than half of Russian adults held tertiary degrees in 2012 -- the equivalent of college degree in the United States -- more than in any other country reviewed. Meanwhile, less than 4% of Chinese adults had tertiary qualifications in 2012, less than in any other country. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 10 countries with the highest proportion of adults holding a college degree.

Parchment, a company that processes transcripts for high school students applying to college, analyzed data from the approximately 28,000 applicants who used the service to apply for college this past academic year. Using the choices that these students made when they were admitted to more than one institution — what economists call “revealed preference” — it created a ranking system of where American high schoolers choose when they have a choice.

Four years ago, the sociologists Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa dropped a bomb on American higher education. Their groundbreaking book, “Academically Adrift,” found that many students experience “limited or no learning” in college. Today, they released a follow-up study, tracking the same students for two years after graduation, into the workplace, adult relationships and civic life. The results suggest that recent college graduates who are struggling to start careers are being hamstrung by their lack of learning.

The statistics on physician suicide are frightening: Physicians are more than twice as likely to kill themselves as nonphysicians (and female physicians three times more likely than their male counterparts). Some 400 doctors commit suicide every year. Young physicians at the beginning of their training are particularly vulnerable: In a recent study, 9.4 percent of fourth-year medical students and interns — as first-year residents are called — reported having suicidal thoughts in the previous two weeks.

Giải thưởng Sách hay 2014 (GTSH 2014) do Viện IRED tổ chức đã bước vào mùa giải thứ 4. Theo Điều lệ GTSH, mục đích của giải thưởng thường niên này là “Góp phần lựa chọn sách hay, quảng bá sách hay và lan tỏa tri thức từ những cuốn sách hay; gợi mở những xu hướng đọc sách, viết sách, dịch sách và làm sách tiến bộ”.

Ban tổ chức giải thưởng Sách hay 2014 do Viện Nghiên cứu phát triển giáo dục (IRED) tổ chức vừa trao giải cho những tác giả, dịch giả có những tư tưởng, triết lý tiến bộ, khai minh cao.

Trong số 13 cuốn sách được trao giải thưởng Sách hay 2014 (Tuổi Trẻ ngày 12-9), ở lĩnh vực sách nghiên cứu, cuốn sách Văn hóa tộc người Việt Nam của Nguyễn Từ Chi (NXB Thời Đại và tạp chí Văn Hóa Nghệ Thuật ấn hành, 2013) đã được trao giải.
Tuy nhiên, đây lại là cuốn sách được “tái bản và sửa chữa” một cách cẩu thả, vi phạm bản quyền từ cuốn sách gốc mang tên Góp phần nghiên cứu văn hóa và tộc người của Nguyễn Từ Chi (NXB Văn Hóa Thông Tin và tạp chí Văn Hóa Nghệ Thuật ấn hành) năm 1996.
