Veterans and military groups have called on the government to crack down on colleges that charge exorbitant fees but provide poor training and job placement. Veterans are particularly sought after by for-profit colleges because money from the G.I. Bill does not count against their cap on federal funding.

Last year, the for-profit Corinthian Colleges chain collapsed under the weight of government investigations and allegations of fraud. Its demise left tens of thousands of Corinthian students with loans that will ultimately cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars to forgive.

Corinthian Colleges, once one of the nation’s largest for-profit education companies, engaged in apparently unlawful practices by paying its recruiters based on how many sales leads they converted into actual students, according to documents unsealed late last week.

In blunt testimony revealed on Tuesday, former managers of Trump University, the for-profit school started by Donald J. Trump, portray it as an unscrupulous business that relied on high-pressure sales tactics, employed unqualified instructors, made deceptive claims and exploited vulnerable students willing to pay tens of thousands for Mr. Trump’s insights.

The Rhodes Trust announced on Wednesday the largest expansion of the Rhodes scholarship program in its 113-year history.
