PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — The fall from grace of one of Cambodia’s most prominent social activists and the unraveling of her sad tale of being an orphan sold into sex slavery has highlighted what aid workers here say is widespread embellishment and in some cases outright deception in fund-raising, especially among the country’s orphanages.

LAHORE, Pakistan — A young Pakistani couple were tied up and killed, their throats slit with a scythe, after they married for love, the police in Pakistan said Saturday.
The couple, a 17-year-old girl and a 31-year-old man, married on June 18 without the consent of their families in Satrah, a village in Punjab Province in eastern Pakistan, the police said.
The police arrested the family members, who said they were embarrassed by the marriage of their daughter, Muafia Hussein, to a man from what they considered to be a less important tribe. In many areas of Pakistan, the killing of a woman whose behavior is seen as immodest is accepted according to traditions.

Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane of Morocco told Parliament this week that women would be better off at home than in the workplace: “Today, there is a problem with women’s role in modern society,” he said Tuesday in Rabat, the Moroccan capital, when asked about the government’s position on women’s rights. “Women don’t even find time to get married, to be mothers or to educate their children. Why don’t we embrace this sacred status that God gave to women?”

Brig. Gen. Jeffrey A. Sinclair, whose extramarital relationship with a subordinate officer led to charges of sexual assault and a prosecution that ultimately collapsed and embarrassed the military, will retire as a lieutenant colonel, two grades lower than his current rank, the Army said Friday.
“While retirement benefits are mandated by federal law, there is a requirement that an individual must have served satisfactorily in rank before receiving those benefits,” the Army secretary, John M. McHugh, said. “Sinclair displayed a pattern of inappropriate and at times illegal behavior both while serving as a brigadier general and a colonel.”
