Over 70% of philosophers in UK universities are men. We speak to academics about how institutions can become more inclusive
Philosophy stands out among the humanities: it’s one of the few subject areas where women are vastly outnumbered by men.
Although male and female students take philosophy undergraduate courses in almost equal numbers, the number of women who pursue a career in philosophy is much lower. A recent report by the Equality Challenge Unit found that, among non-Stem (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects, philosophy is one of the most male-dominated, with men accounting for 71.2% of the profession.

But Mr. Medalie’s directive also specifies something more unusual: If he developsAlzheimer’s disease or another form ofdementia, he refuses “ordinary means of nutrition and hydration.”

VSED, short for “voluntarily stopping eating and drinking,” is not unheard-of as an end-of-life strategy, typically used by older adults who hope to hasten their decline from terminal conditions. But now ethicists, lawyers and older adults themselves have begun a quiet debate about whether people who develop dementia can use VSED to end their lives by including such instructions in an advance directive.

Many older job seekers know age discrimination, although tough to prove, is a fact of life. But increasingly they are finding jobs at smaller organizations, including nonprofits, start-ups, small trade associations and niche educational programs. Ngày 22.1, TAND TP.HCM ra quyết định đình chỉ giải quyết việc dân sự vụ kiện ở Đại học Hoa Sen (ĐHHS). Ngày 2.8.2014, các cổ đông Trường ĐHHS tổ chức đại hội đồng cổ đông bất thường (ĐHĐCĐBT) năm 2014, với số cổ đông hiện diện đại diện cho 70% số cổ phần có quyền biểu quyết tham dự, thống nhất thông qua việc bãi miễn HĐQT và Ban Kiểm soát đương nhiệm; đồng thời bầu ra HĐQT và Ban Kiểm soát mới.
Sau đó, một số cá nhân đại diện HĐQT và Ban Kiểm soát bị bãi nhiệm đã khởi kiện, yêu cầu TAND TP hủy quyết định của ĐHĐCĐBT.
Ngày 24.12.2014 và 19.1.2015, TAND TP đã 2 lần tống đạt hợp lệ đại diện nguyên đơn tham dự phiên họp nhưng nguyên đơn vắng mặt, khiến các phiên họp không thể diễn ra, nên đã chính thức ban hành quyết định đình chỉ giải quyết việc dân sự nói trên. Quyết định này là cơ sở pháp lý để UBND TP.HCM ra quyết định công nhận HĐQT đã được 70% cổ đông Trường ĐHHS thống nhất bầu ra tại ĐHĐCĐBT vào ngày 2.8.2014.
