Sanford Weill, a Wall Street billionaire, and his wife, Joan, have decided not to donate $20 million to a struggling northern New York college after a judge ruled that the school could not be renamed for Mrs. Weill, a spokesman for the college said on Thursday.

Clearly, the Clinton Foundation functions both to do good deeds and to enhance the Clinton brand, never more so than while Hillary Rodham Clinton is running for president. But from the start, her campaign has been nagged by concerns about how the foundation raises its money. Far less attention has been paid to how that money is spent.

Unlike the super PACs, which are allowed to focus exclusively on elections, groups like the Conservative Solutions Project — known as a 501(c)(4) organizations, after the tax code provisions that govern them — are granted tax exemptions in exchange for devoting themselves to the promotion of “social welfare.”

In the United States, as in much of the rest of the world, college students receive three kinds of public benefits: tuition subsidies, living grants, and public loans. Through various combinations of this benefit troika, almost all students are able to finance their college education. Some on the left are very unhappy with the precise mix of student benefits currently on offer. Student debt activists, among others, complain that tuition subsidies and living grants make up too little of the student benefit bundle, while public loans make up too much of it.

EVERY so often, you hear grotesquely wealthy American chief executives announce in sanctimonious tones the intention to use their accumulated hundreds of millions, or billions, “to lift people out of poverty.” Sometimes they are referring to Africans, but sometimes they are referring to Americans. And here’s the funny thing about that: In most cases, they have made their fortunes by impoverishing whole American communities, having outsourced their manufacturing to China or India, Vietnam or Mexico.

As it stands now, the country’s most selective colleges are dominated by students from affluent backgrounds. As my Times colleague David Leonhardt noted in a recent article: “For every student from the entire bottom half of the nation’s income distribution at Dartmouth, Penn, Princeton, Yale and more than a few other colleges, there appear to be roughly two students from just the top 5 percent (which means they come from families making at least $200,000).”

Theo tôi, tổ chức thi tốt nghiếp THPT và tuyển sinh không phải là việc của Bộ mà là của cơ sở,. Việc thi tốt nghiệp THPT nên để các Sở GD-ĐT tổ chức, việc tuyển sinh giao cho các trường đại học, cao đẳng. Các trường có thể tổ chức thi tuyển riêng, liên kết thi tuyển theo cụm, theo học bạ là tùy mỗi trường.
Việc Bộ GD-ĐT nên tập trung bây giờ là có biện pháp để các trường kiểm định chất lượng, công bố kết quả kiểm định theo định kỳ.

Tại Đà Nẵng nhiều trường đến nay chỉ tuyển được vài chục chỉ tiêu. Để duy trì “sự sống”, một số trường phải cho công nhân thuê trọ…
