Các trường như Harvard có các nguồn thu chính đến từ: Các khoản quyên góp, Học phí, tài trợ, quà hiện vật, cho thuê bằng sáng chế. Theo Bloomberg, những khoản này chiếm từ 60-70% ngân sách của Harvard. Phần còn lại đến từ chính nguồn lực của trường.

Education Management Corporation will pay $95.5 million to settle allegations that it lied about its recruiting practices. The sum, announced Monday by U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, is the largest civil award to date in a case involving a for-profit college.
More than 90 percent of the company's revenues, Lynch noted, come from taxpayers in the form of federal education funding for students. The college collected nearly a billion dollars in federal aid just last year.
As part of a consent decree with the company, 39 states and the District of Columbia agreed to end their investigations into its recruiting and marketing.

The for-profit college operator Education Management Corporation will forgive loans to about 80,000 former students nationwide as part of an agreement with state attorneys general resulting from a multiyear investigation of the company’s aggressive recruitment practices.

The case against Education Management is the latest action the Department of Education has taken in a crackdown on fraud in the for-profit college sector aimed at denying federal money to programs whose graduates do not earn enough to pay back their college loans.

Earlier this year, the department said that tens of thousands of students who had attended Heald College, Corinthian campuses mostly in California, were eligible for immediate processing of requests for debt relief. Now, the pool of eligible students will include about 85,000 students who attended Everest University and WyoTech, two other programs in California, as well as students at Everest online programs in Florida, from 2010 to 2013.
