Women who develop slight but detectable deficits in memory and mental acuity late in life tend to decline faster than men with mild impairment, researchers reported on Tuesday.
Some two-thirds of the five million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease are women, in part because women live longer. The authors of the new study, who presented their work at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Washington, said their findings indicated nothing about possible causes of gender differences and had no immediate implications for treatment.

Before age 2, children should not be exposed to any electronic media, the pediatrics academy maintains, because “a child’s brain develops rapidly during these first years, and young children learn best by interacting with people, not screens.” Older children and teenagers should spend no more than one or two hours a day with entertainment media, preferably with high-quality content, and spend more free time playing outdoors, reading, doing hobbies and “using their imaginations in free play,” the academy recommends.

Throughout the months, and then years, that Sky spent in Iraq, she was amazed at the naïveté she encountered among the Americans. “When I arrived, one of the questions put to me was ‘What do we need to do to be loved?’ ” Sky writes. “I told them that people who invaded other people’s countries, and killed people who were no threat to them, would never be loved.”

After Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, died in 1991, his widow, Audrey Geisel, decided to renovate their hilltop house in La Jolla, Calif. She and an assistant cleared out his office, donating most of his valuable illustrations and early drafts to the University of California, San Diego, and stashing some doodles and abandoned sketches in a box.
Through painstaking work and a meticulous, almost forensic reconstruction of Mr. Geisel’s creative process, those abandoned pages have yielded an unexpected new Dr. Seuss book, now called “What Pet Should I Get?” When Random House publishes it on Tuesday, with a first printing of one million copies, it will add a surprising coda to Dr. Seuss’ sizable canon.

In “Mockingbird,” a book once described by Oprah Winfrey as “our national novel,” Atticus praised American courts as “the great levelers,” dedicated to the proposition that “all men are created equal.” In “Watchman,” set in the 1950s in the era of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, he denounces the Supreme Court, says he wants his home state “to be left alone to keep house without advice from the N.A.A.C.P.” and describes N.A.A.C.P.-paid lawyers as “standing around like buzzards.”
In “Mockingbird,” Atticus was a role model for his children, Scout and Jem — their North Star, their hero, the most potent moral force in their lives. In “Watchman,” he becomes the source of grievous pain and disillusionment for the 26-year-old Scout (or Jean Louise, as she’s now known).

Meredith later told me that she’d expected to meet an author “vain and reserved, distinguished looking, done up,” and Nancy, a lady who was “aloof, who might make an appearance and be gone.” I summoned a mysterious ghost. Like Alabamians who had once spellbound the nation — Hank Williams, Rosa Parks, Hank Aaron, Helen Keller — Ms. Lee had entered the realm of myth.

Harper Lee’s “Go Set a Watchman” sold more than 1.1 million copies in North America in its first week on sale, and now has more than 3.3 million copies in print, the publisher, HarperCollins, said Monday.
Despite the controversies clouding the book’s release, and mixed reviews, readers flocked to bookstores to buy “Watchman,” which arrived 55 years after Ms. Lee’s debut novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” HarperCollins has done multiple printings of the book.
