Trước Thế Chiến Thứ Hai bùng nổ, chính quyền thực dân động viên, cưỡng bức hai vạn thanh niên Việt Nam sang Pháp thay thế công nhân trong các xưởng sản xuất vũ khí phải ra trận chống phát xít Đức.
Bị hiểu lầm là lính đánh thuê nên họ đã bị quân đội Hít-le hành hạ và bị các ông chủ bù nhìn Pháp bóc lột thậm tệ. Những lính thợ Việt đã phải sống một cuộc sống đày ải, bi thảm trên đất Pháp dưới sự thống trị của quân phát xít Đức. Họ chính là người đầu tiên trồng lúa, làm ra những hạt gạo ở Cà Mạc (Carmague) miền Nam nước Pháp.

Truyện thơ được dịch sang tiếng Pháp ngay từ năm 1864. Bản dịch của Abel des Michel năm 1883 đã khơi nguồn cảm hứng cho một sĩ quan hải quân Pháp, Eugène Gibert (công tác tại Huế từ 1895 đến 1897), ý tưởng thực hiện một bản tranh minh họa tác phẩm và việc này được giao cho Lê Đức Trạch, một Nho sĩ cung đình Huế, thực hiện. Khi về lại Pháp, Eugène Gibert đã trao tặng tác phẩm này cho thư viện thuộc Viện Pháp vào năm 1899 và bản thảo này được khám phá ra vào năm 2011. Đây là bản vẽ tranh màu (139 tờ tranh đa màu sắc) minh họa toàn bộ truyện thơ Lục Vân Tiên và là bản thảo độc nhất vô nhị tính đến thời điểm này.
Quyển I, được gạn lọc một cách hữu ý và các bản vẽ được trình bày tương ứng với nội dung trích đoạn thơ bằng ba thứ tiếng (Pháp, Việt, Anh). Quyển II bao gồm toàn bộ phần giới thiệu, bình luận và chú giải (lời tựa, lời giới thiệu, lịch sử bản thảo, chú thích, chú giải lời thơ, bản phiên âm đầu tiên từ bản thơ minh họa tranh màu sang bản Việt ngữ la tinh hóa).

Born on a rice farm outside Saigon in 1988, Mr. Vuong, who won this year’s Whiting Award for poetry, was 2 when his family arrived in the United States, after more than a year in a refugee camp in the Philippines.
